“Shine, shine!” was an old street cry, from the days when shoeshining was still a trade and a nimble boy could put a gleam on a passer-by's shoes for a few coins. Our story turns on exactly such a boy, who one day decides to shine shoes in exchange for a fairy tale. Yes, you read that correctly.
Eduard, who carries a king's name, has a family so poor they cannot even buy him a book of fairy tales. So the little one, with an idea of pure genius, takes it into his head to shine shoes and earn the money for the book himself.
One by one the customers come, men and women, the kind and the crafty, and each gives Eduard not only a wonderful tale — a world of imagination and adventure where animals and people mix, pirates and treasure, love and goodness, wisdom and foolishness — but also draws out the generosity and the largeness of heart of this boy, still small, yet a king in mind and spirit.
The love of books, of stories, of knowing things, is what makes Eduard the happiest and the richest person in the world.
